Ford (captain ) : makesthe mostof his height on a fast wicket, whenhe drives to perfection ; fair bowler. *J. F. Hastings : an excellent bat when set, but plays uncertainly at first ; drives well to the off ; fields brilliantly , especially at cover-point. H. H. Dobinson : a patient bat, but lacking in power ; is moreat homewith fast than with slow bowling ; very useful in the field (captain for 1881). *A. J. Perkins : has very strong defence, with un- flagging patience , anda straight bat ; a good long-stop. *G. G. Keane : a steady painstaking but unsuccessful bat ; bowls well at times , with difficult break , often erratic ; a good field . E. Forbes : has plenty of pluck , but wants finish in his play; shows promise for the future ; useful field . *M. R. Matthews : hits very hard when he makes up his mind, but with a crooked bat; an uncertain point. H. G. Topham: bowls as well as ever, slow left -hand, with strong break, and considerable commandover the ball. A .
