James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annnual 1881

T H EUNIVERSITIES AND PUBLIC SCHOOLSIN 1880. 137 well, but has not developed so muchas was expected ; is often brilliant whenhis services are required for a ' run out ' ; an improved bat, but not sufficiently vigorous ; has been seen to bowl slows. *M. H. G e m: the most successful bat Malverncricket has seen for s o m eyears; on a fast wicket he is wonderfully effective , his cutting and leg-hitting being very smart and clean ; a sharp field at point , frequently making good catches . *P. C. Millard : has had to bear the brunt of the bowling, and has acquitted himself right well ; without the aid of Millard's left hand, the eleven would have fared badly in manymatches ; bowls more with his head than he did last year, and does not tire so soon ; is also a left -handed batsman, and a remarkably hard-hitter , but very uncertain , as his bat is too generally in a horizontal position ; an excellent field and catch . * W. S. Jobson : a punish- ing leg -hitter , but appears to have devoted his energies almost entirely to this one stroke ; a really good deep-field , never missing a catch . E. С. Evelyn: a capital bat, with a beautiful cut, in point of style is not far removed from being the best bat in the eleven, but his want of reach and power have frequently stood between him and long scores ; a very good field at cover-point , with a splendid return ; his bowling is more remark- able for twist than for accuracy of pitch , but has been successful morethan once. *G. F. Wooldridge : a very useful memberof the eleven , seldom failing to score ; is a steady and painstaking bat, playing very straight , but is too muchgiven to letting off loose balls ; a fair change bowler, and has donegood service in this department, but is too short pitched to be really dangerous ; a good and energetic field . *F. R. Healing: cameout some- what late in the season , but has played capital cricket on several occasions ; has the makingof a thorough good bat, playing especially well off his legs ; occasionally brilliant in the field , but rather uncertain . *J. Horsfield : is a straight fast bowler, but is perhaps too plain to be first -rate ; was prevented byillness from preserving his best form ; is a fair bat and good hitter ; has m a d esomefair catches , andis a greatly improved field . F. P. LeMarchand: showed considerable promise at the beginning of the year , but has been pursuedbybad luck since his promotion to the eleven ; has some neat and effective strokes on the off -side , but should beware of flourish ; a good field , and generally to be relied on to bring off a catch . *F. S. Coke : an erratic fast bowler, who has secured a respectable numberof wickets with his ' Yorkers ' ; as a bat he does not makesufficient use of his hitting powers ; a reliable long-stop. * C. H. S. Moore : a very fair fast bowler, with a good action ; is a somewhatreckless bat, but hits well ; a useful field and catch , butnot always safe .
