Gurdon: has workedh a r d and perseveringly as a captain , and deserves the highest praise for his managementboth on and off the field ; is a strong bat, and with more patience would make longer scores ; a first -rate field anywhere. *H. G. Currie : a capital bat, with firm , forward, play, but rather too fond of 'placing ' to square -leg ; a dashing field , with a slow return . E.A. Surtees : a first -rate bat , whose wrist -play is strong and admirable , but he fails on a slow ground , and often from want of confidence ; a good long -stop . *A. C. Curric : a lively bat, without very much style or defence ; a really goodfield . R. H. B. Simpson : plays with an upright bat, but is deficient in freedom, both in forward play and hitting , promises well , however; a quickfield and throws in well . T. Bailey : a fair bowler, but too fond of trying ' Yorkers ; ' as a bat , has not been very successful ; wants much practice in catching . F. C. Langstaff : a free bat, with an inclination to step in front of his wicket and pull ; a very promising wicket -keeper . *F. W. Welldon : plays with a straight bat , but with far too little freedom ; has improved as a field . *T. H. Denny : a quick run-getter , but uncertain at the beginning of his innings ; sometimes fields well . *R. V. Steward : a medium-paced bowler, with break from the leg ; a moderate bat, but hits well to the off . W. A. Wheeler : a lucky bat with a goodeye; a promising bowler with good delivery and variation of pitch and pace .
