O. Vizard (capt ., and for 1881 ) ; workedhard as captain against great difficulties ; has a good cut and off- drive, butmustplay with a straighter bat; a steady field , but hardly quick enough for point . *F. M. Reynolds : is a good fast bowler , was unfortu- nately unable to play for the eleven in manymatches ; hits hard, but is still a moderatebat ; a fair field . B. D. Carey : the best bat in the eleven , having good defence and hitting power; played several good innings on critical occasions ; sometimes useful as a change bowler ; a splendid field at cover -point , and always works hard . W. P. Richardson : a good wicket- keeper, seldom missing chances on the off-side ; muchimproved in his batting towards the end of the season . *J. Haggard: played well at the beginning of the season , but fell off unaccountably later on ; rather too eager to hit ; a fair field . *R. Trevor : a successful bat on hard ground, ashehits and plays forward very vigorously ; unreliable if the ground is wet; bowls sometimes as a change; a goodfield far out. T. C. Wilson : a very steady bat, playing very straight ; useful to go in first ; a fair field and change bowler (slow-right). W . Evershed : bowls very straight and steadily ; a hard hitting bat, and will improve in defence ; a fair field . C. G. Carnegy : a steady bat in a match, but musttake morepains in prac- tice if he is to become good; a fair field and slow change bowler . F. H. Wheeler : a painstaking bat, but has to learn to use his body in playing forward; a goodfield . H. C. MacTier : a promising bat, with a deal of freedom ; bowls fast -round , but must change his action , which is now often unfair ; a fair field . K 2
