Powell (Capt.) : a thoroughly sound cricketer ; as a batsmanhas a very strong defence with goodpunish- ing powers ; as a captain has been most successful ; an energetic field and and good judge of the game. C. W. Wright : first -class bat, with good defence and punishing powers, especially to leg ; his back play is very hard, but he is a little too fond of it ; a splendid wicket-keeper . *E. L. Dames: a very steady bat as a rule , but spoilt himself in the middle of the season b y attempting to hit ; muchimproved field . *L. M. Richards : a really good slow bowler , using his head well ; unlucky bat with plenty of style ; good field at slip . *P. M. Walters : a very fair bat, but cannot get rid of a slight tendency to play round the ball ; splendid field , never missing a catch . L. Owen: a good bat on a slow ground ; not afraid of hitting an over -pitched ball ; lost all his bowling ; magnificent field at cover point , with perfect return ; captain for 1881. W. Lea : unfortunately prevented by a recent illness from playing in most of the matches; showedgreat improvement as a bat ; good field . E. P. Spurway : a very pretty bat , his cutting imbing and hitting to being very good uncertain prebat, his good ; erratic fast bowler, sometimes very effective . * W. E. Lewis : one of the best bats in the eleven , his forward play being first -class ; bowls well sometimes on a sticky wicket ; can field , but is very lazy . R. T. Rokeby : a greatly improved bat ; and has learned that wrists are meantto be used, but is still very stiff ; a tremendous hitter whenhe chooses ; fair field when he does not get a catch . C. A. Smith : bowled with great effect at the beginning of the season , but seemedto lose all sting ; poor field ; likely to improve as a bat. A. M. Streatfield : a tremendous scorer off loose bowling ,
