1 2 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L JESUS COLLEGE ELEVENIN 1880.-W. F. Evans (114 ), captain , 1880 : played but little during the latter part of the season ; not always successful as a bat , but thoroughly energetic every way ; very tricky at the wicket . D. M. Jenkins (6.3 ) ; a poor batsman , with a poky style ; bowls well at times , with an awkward curl from leg ; sadly in need of practice in the field . J. Carron (5.6 ) : surprises everyone at odd momentsby form as a batsman , though setting little store by it personally ; not reliable in the deep-field ; bowls very nicely on occasion , with plenty of length in his delivery . E. J. Evans (57) : cramped as a bat ; his fielding at times redeems himfrom mediocrity , with a woeful falling off under difficulties ; should learn to pick up the ball before he tries to return it . A. M. Evanson (5) : poor as a batsman, though there should be material about ; needs a lot of practice in the field . A. H. Jones (3.5 ) : has all the will of a cricketer if he sometimes misses the way; fair field , though very nervous over a catch . C. A. W. Gilbert (31 · 11 ) : played consistently well through the season ; dangerous bat after an over or two ; fine field , especially at cover-point or long-leg ; and sometimes shows form at the wicket . J. Lloyd Williams (28.1 ) : rather a crampedbut goodbat, cutting well behind point ; wants life in the field . O. Jones (244) : Anugly but effective style in batting , being very stiff in the arms, and little or no wrist play ; a very nasty bowler on a bad wicket , and not easy to face on a good one ; fair field . G. E. Robinson (14.2 ) : disappointing as a bat , but thoroughly reliable as a bowler , with a nice easy action (left -hand) and very straight ; wants a lot moreactivity and earnestness in his fielding . D. R. Thomas (17.5 ) : a thoroughly good, but nervous batsman, with pretty style , though weak on the leg -stump ; very fair bowler with easy delivery ; and painstaking in the field . W O. Nares : a poor bat, with no determination wherejust a little would get him runs ; at times bowls exceedingly well (fast left -hand), and fairly certain in his fielding , with a tendency to be casual . W. Oakley (1.1): is worth more runs than he makes; a good back-stop, but needs more life in redeeming a mistake . J. J. Hucknell (1.5 ) ; does not pretend to bat ; but as a back-stop is first -class ; and at times very difficult to play as a bowler , with a great break -back and plenty of pace .
