JOHN'S COLLEGE ELEVENin 1880.-J. B. Armstrong : a very steady and safe bat ; fair change bowler, medium-pace ; good field but inclined to be lazy . A. R. Aspinall : was prevented from playing muchby illness ; is an exceedingly steady bat ; fair slow bowler ; an excellent long -stop, and safe catch . J. A. Bevan: brilliant bat on his day; good fast bowler, but not so successful as last year. J. Colman : a very successful bat with peculiar style ; scored largely at the beginning of the term ; an erratic change bowler and energetic field . P. G. Exham: the best bat in the eleven, and was very successful for the college ; brilliant field . F. D Gaddum: a very good slow left -handed bowler, especially on a fast wicket a m u c himprovedbat. J. H . P a y n e: a goodbat; invaluable to the eleve as a wicket -keeper ; a very brilliant field and safe catch , and a fast but erratic change bowler ; was captain of the eleven in 1880. R. Spencer proved a very useful acquisition to the eleven ; is a good bat , generally making runs ; also a good fast bowler and field . R. Thorman : fair bat butdidnot comeup to expectations formedof him; fair change bowler. E. Wild: fair bat; excellent field at point ; unfortunately for the eleven hi bowling powers have quite deserted him. J. G. Wiseman : hard -hitting bat and very good long-stop , for which he got his place in the eleven. P. Wrigley is a useful bat, with an ugly style ; a very good and safe catch also a fair wicket-keeper.
