Mackern : a most energetic cricketer , invaluable to the eleven both with the ball andbat; an excellent captain , having thorough knowledge of the game. W. C. Bull : has one good stroke , but is too fond of using it regardless of the pitch and direction of the ball ever to makemanyruns ; a fair field . W. H. Caldwell : has nice style , but lacks strength , seldom scored in term, but was very successful in the Long Vacation ; a casual field . F. E. Lacey, captain for 1881 : is a very hard hitter , with a fine style , has this year exceeded his former score (once making 271 ). Good right -arm slow bowler , with a lot of work on the ball ; safe field . E. W.R. Clarke : a very useful m a n, can bowland bat, invariably makingruns, but has an original style ; good field . E. H. Topham: a very steady bat, wouldmakeruns if he hadmorehitting power; can bowl ; a careless field . G. Francis : A fine powerful bat , but is much too slack ever to becomefirst -class ; can field whenhelikes . J. M. Luff : Avery correct bat, never taking a liberty , shows promise of improvement ; good field . G . C. Fitzgerald : Generally makes runs , but wants more style ; careful field . W. A. Evelyn : a pretty bat , generally reaching double figures ; a very useful field . J. L. Templer : a very energetic field , good bat, fair fast bowler. T i m e s Inns.
