James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annnual 1881
110 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. C H A P T E R I The Universities and Public Schools in 1880. FROM the commencement of the season it was everywhere accepted as a certainty that the Inter -University Match of 1880 , would be again a gift for Cambridge. On paper, indeed, the Cantabs were unmeasurably superior to their rivals of Oxford, and if the former hardly played up to expectation in some of their early games, still their play all round was so far above that of the Dark Blues that their easy victory was only a confirmation of public form. A m o n gthe Public Schools , Harrowand Rugbyshowedup perhaps best ; and the Harrovians w o nthe great match of the year quite ontheir merits . Eton, who only beat Winchester by nine runs , being sadly deficient in bowling , Marlborough made even a poorer show than usual against Rugby; and Clifton and Cheltenhamwere not credited with any very brilliant performances, though the latter were the better eleven . Charterhouse not only succeeded in defeating Westminster, but made a good show on more than one occasion , notably against the Marylebone Club and Ground. Details of the doings of the other Schools will be gathered from the particulars that follow . The best Public School player of the year, beyond a doubt, was C. F. H. Leslie , the RugbyCaptain; and his powers of hitting ought to makehim a valuable addition to the Oxford University Eleven of 1881 . C A M B R I D G E U N I V E R S I T Y .
