9 8 LILLYWHITE'SC R I C K E T E R S' A N N U A L. bowling with the greatest ease , and his batting was the event of the year : Moule, the last batsman of the Australians , went in with 32 runs , still wanted to save the innings , and his unwearied defence at this critical point converted what appeared to be a one -sided game into a very in- teresting finish . Murdoch's 153 , not out , will rank as one of the very best batting exploits recorded in England, and it was the more meritorious considering that it was made against the very best bowling of the country ; and with only one difficult chance in the last over . H e was in while 313 runs were scored . Englandhad only 57 to win, but the numbercost them five wickets , andfor their victory they were indebted greatly to Mr. Frank Penn's well -got 27, not out . At the close of the match there was a scene of the greatest excitement ; and Lord Harris , Murdoch, and W. G. Grace had to display their oratorical powers before the thousands assembled in front of the pavilion . Not a hitch of any kind occurred throughout the match. The spectators were orderly and impartial , the arrangements good, and it will be long before this contest is forgotten . Before leaving the subject let us record that the cricketing publicblic has to thank Lord Harris for the pleasure it derived on this occasion , as but for his aid the m a t c hneverwouldhavec o m eoff .
