Cambridge, 199 and 40 (three wickets down) ; total , 239 . Potter(Surrey). O v e r s. 8 9 Maidens. 5 3 3 7 R u n s. Wickets. 9 (3) Gentlemenv. Players. June 30, July 1, 2, 1880. ThePlayers had their full strength , but the Gentlemen missed the services of Hon. A. Lyttelton and Mr. A. G. Steel , the latter of w h o mwas unable to play at the last moment owing to a strain . With fine weather somegood cricket would have been shown, but rain interfered with the gameon each of the three days, and batting became a fluke . The Players had a great pull in going in first , and they made the best use of the wicket while it waseasy. Fourwickets realised 159 runs (Barnes, 63) ; but Mr. Morton rattled the remaining batsmen down, and the innings closed for 173, the last six wickets adding 14 with four ciphers . W h e nthe Gentlemen entered on their second innings the wicket was thoroughly unplayable , and Messrs. W. G. Grace, A. P. Lucas, J. Shuter, and F. Penn, were all out for 6 runs . Heavyrain on the third afternoon caused the wicket to be a little easier , but the improvement came too late , and though Mr. Hornby played a very fine hitting innings of 71 , the Players always had a little inhand. TheGentlemenwere beaten by37 runs; the first defeat they have suffered at the Ovalsince 1865. NOTE. The bowling figures of Mr.MortonandShawwill repay inspection .
