At one time it seemed as if Surrey were going to be behind on the first innings , with seven wickets downfor 111 against a total of 179, but Read(57) andHum- phrey (56 ) added 113 before they were parted , and ultimately Sussex were in aminority of 76. The loose fielding of Surrey on the second night im- proved the prospects of the home shire materially , and helped Sussex to reach a big second score of 268, of which Mr. Ellis contributed 103. Surrey wereleft with 194 to win, andwhenplay ceased had lost four goodwickets for 108, so that neither side had any the best of the draw. Surrey , 254 and 108 (four wickets down) ; total , 362. Miserable weather, a treacherous wicket , only a second rate eleven ofEngland-in fact an utter failure in every sense . Emmett(5 and 47) wasthe highest scorer on the side of Daft's Eleven, and Scotton, thoughhe hadsomeluck, hit with great freedom for his 52 for Englandin the first innings . Englandhadmade42 out of 106 wanted to win for the loss of five wickets whentime was up, so that the gamehadto be drawn, if any- thing, in favour of Daft's team.
