Raindelayed a commencementon the first day, and on the second the wicket was suffering from the wet, so that run getting was difficult . Mr. Ellis's 51 for Sussex was the highest score of the three first innings , andit seemeda very even thing whether Surrey would makethe 125 runs wanted towin. Five wickets were downfor 63, but a very useful score of 34 not out (33 fromleg-hits) by Mr. Wyld, turned the scale , andat the end, Surrey had amajority of four wickets in their favour . Oval, August 12, 13, 14, 1880 Amatch set apart for the benefit of James Street , though not a success , owing to the collapse of the Surrey eleven on the third morning . York- shire went in first on a splendid wicket , and madethe highest total (398) of the year in a county match . Ulyett's 141 , made without a chance , fairly broke the Surrey bowling, and every one of the ten batsmenwho were out got double figures . Humphrey (43) and Read (39) enabled Surrey to reach a fair total of 176; but in their succeeding attempt Allen Hill's fast bowling appeared to demoralise them completely ; and Pooley (53), who played better cricket for his runsthan he has shownfor manya year, alone m a d eany stand.
