James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annnual 1881
T H ECOUNTIESIN 1 8 8 0. 9 3 include Messrs. A. P. Lucas, G. Strachan, and W. W. Read, Surrey ought to be able to make a good fight with most of the shires , but Mr. Lucas appa- rently does not find county cricket to his taste ; Mr. Strachan was only able to play rarely , and Mr. Read's profession prevents him helping Surrey till the end of July. In batting the eleven showed an extraordinary amount of inconsistency , though it must be admitted that luck was at times much against them. Occasionally they madegood innings ; notably against York- shire , at Sheffield , and against Gloucestershire , at Cheltenham, but when- ever an effort was required they collapsed ; and their performance against Notts, at the Oval, when they were dismissed in the first innings for a total of 16, enables them to claim the distinction of the smallest score in a county match , only equalled by Derbyshire against Notts , in 1879. Messrs . Lucas and Strachan wouldhave strengthened the eleven , where they were painfully weak, in bowling , and indeed Potter was the only trundler on w h o mthe county could rely . Blamires , whenhe got on to good wickets was a comparative failure , and although Barratt was successful toward the end, hewasleft out during the greater part of the season . Mr. John Shuter set those amateurs, able to play , a good example, bytaking part in every match, and at times his batting was very effective . Jupp, too , played some fine in- nings , and Mr. Read, though a little unlucky , showed fine form, but other- wise the batting was very unreliable , though a youngprofessional turned up in M. Read, who showed good cricket , and is likely to be of great use. Badfielding , in more than one case , ruined what small chances Surrey had . R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s .
