Daft at times played well , but the best performances were done by the younger membersof the team; and Barnes, whohad the best average of the year amongprofessional cricketers , showed throughout splendid cricket , having the best average in county matches, only excepting Mr. W. G. Grace. During the early part of the season Scotton scored very well , and a promising young batsman was added to the eleven in the colt , Gunn. Alfred Shawwas, as he always has been, very successful with the ball ; and Morleyhas hardly ever bowledbetter , as his average will show. Barnes and Flowers also did their fair share of the bowling; andSherwin proved himself the best wicket-keeper the county has had for some time. All round, Notts had a very fine eleven, and its claim to the first position among the counties cannot be challenged , R e s u l t so fM a t c h e s .
