Bates's absence crippled the Yorkshire Eleven considerably , and Pinder wasleft out to give a colt (Aspinall) a trial . Middlesex bad the best of matters in going in first , and Yorkshire , batting in a bad light , only madea poor show, Lockwood contributing 57 towards a total of 104. Chiefly through the effective bowling of Clarke , and the brilliant wicket -keeping of H o n. Alfred Lyttelton , Middlesex had a lead of 85 on the first innings , and in the end they wonwith five wickets to spare . Middlesex , 189 and 71 (five wickets down) ; total , 260. TheSoutherners madea bad start with five of the best wickets downfor 26 ; and the tail did, for a wonder, its pro- portion of the work, as in the second innings , though the highest score on the side was 29. A very creditable 71 by Barnes , and a hard hit 30, not out , by Alfred Shaw, were the features of the first innings of Notts ; and they experienced little difficulty in getting the 73 Middlesex left them to win, having five wickets in hand at the finish . Middlesex , 93 and 151 ; total , 244. Notts, 172 and 73 (five wickets down) ; total , 245. B A T T I N GA V E R A G E S . •T i m e s n o t M o s t i na n Aver- I n n s. o u t.
