James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annnual 1881
T H ECOUNTIES IN 1880. 8 5 (5) Lancashirev. Yorkshire. Manchester , August 5, 6, 7, 1880 . Raindelayed the commencementof the match, andcaused it , as it had its predecessor , to be prematurely stopped at an exciting phase . Neither county had quite its best eleven , still somegood cricket was shownunder unpropitious circumstances . Mr. Hornby scored 42 of the first 45 for Lancashire, but the tail did little , and the last five wickets only added 29 runs. In a bad light on the first night , Yorkshire did well to get 67 runs for the loss of only one wicket : but the following morning, Nash and Bar- low carried everything before them, and the last seven Yorkshire wickets only realised 24, Emmett(44) and Lockwood (41) contributing 85 out of 120fromthe bat. Barlow's ten was the only double figure in the second innings of Lancashire ; and Yorkshire had made4 out of 55 required to win, without the loss of a wicket, whenthe gamehad to be given up as drawn owingto rain. A tone time the gamewas all in favour of Surrey, but loose fielding destroyed their chances materially , and their batting failed as usual , when an effort was wanted. Thanks to an excellent innings of 90 by Jupp, and the good bowling of Barratt , Surrey forced their opponents to follow on in a minority of 113 runs ; but the Lancastrians scored heavily in their second effort , and the result was a total of 314 , to which Mr. Hornby con- tributed 126, and Mr. Taylor 65. Theformer was badly missed whenhe had got very few, and the latter before he had scored , and these mistakes cost Surrey the match. As it was, though Messrs . J. Shuter and Read began by scoring 40 in 15 minutes, the hometeam were unable to get the 202 wantedto win, and lost by 60 runs . Lancashire , 113 and314; total , 427.
