8 4 LILLYWHITE'SC R I C K E T E R S' A N N U A L. (2) Lancashire v. Notts. Manchester, June 17, 18, 19, 1880. With the bowling on both sides very high scoring was out of the question , though the Lancastrians missed the help of Mr. A. G. Steel in this department . A very weil -hit 63 by Scotton , whomade more than half the first total (121 ) of Notts , was the highest score of the match , and the largest innings was Lancashire's opening total of 132. It was a very close thing on the third morning, when Lancashire went in with 101 to win and seven wickets to fall ; but rain madethe ground easier for the batsmen as well as more dificult for the bowlers , and Barnes (39) and Flowers (39 notout) fairly wonthe match for Notts by five wickets . Lancashire , 132 and 117 ; total , 249. Notts, 121 and 129 (five wickets down) ; total , 250. Flowers (1st innings , Lancashire ) Barlow(1st innings , Notts) Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Sheffield , July 12, 13, 14, 1880. 4 6 Rainonly admitted the match to advance until luncheon time on the second day, and thus the chances of an exciting gamewere lost . The soft wicket helped the bowling of Bates and Peate at the outset , and Lancashire madea very bad start . Seven of the best wickets were downfor 43; but Pilling (not out , 44) and Briggs (44) more than doubled the score while they were together , and the innings after all reached 125. A useful fifty- onebyEmmettenabled Yorkshire to head their opponents by 29 runs ; but whenthe game was stopped , Lancashire were only 12 behind , with all their wickets to fall , so that there was really nothing to choose between the two sides . Lancashire, 125 and 1 7 (no wicket down) ; total , 142. Yorkshire , 154. Mr. A. G. Steel (Lancashire ) . Overs. 5 0 Maidens. 2 6 R u n s. Wickets. 6 3 7 (4) Lancashire v. Notts. Nottingham , July 15, 16, 1880 .. Heavy rains made the wicket play very queerly , and it was a bowlers ' match throughout . Eight Lancashire wiokets were down for 23, and it was only a timely score of 29 by Watson that brought the total to 72. In the second innings of that county five batsmen failed to score , and Notts found a dificulty in getting the 52 runs wantedto win, having only four wickets to spare at the finish . In all , 36 wickets realised 238 runs. Lancashire , 72 and 46 ; total , 118. Notts , 66 and 54 (six wickets down) ; total , 120 . Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets.
