Surrey weaker even than usual in an out match, madea very poor show in every part of the game. Loose field- ing chiefly helped Lancashire to reach a total of 196, but the Surrey bat- ting proved utterly unequal to the task of saving the innings , and their defeat was certain from the first . The last six batsmen of the Surrey were a useful lot , and in their two attempts it is well worthy of record , that together they contributed eight runs. In the second innings the brothers Shuter were responsible for 60 out of 66 runs from the bat, and at one time Barlowa n d W a t s o ndelivered 19 overs for four runs a n dsix wickets .
