To goin first is, indeed , a considerable advantage there , but Surrey threw awaythe excellent chance they had at one time byslovenly fielding , and their defeat wasdue mainly to their ownmistakes. Mr. J. Shuter (52 and 36) hit well for Surrey each time, but otherwise the batting of that county was very poor , and, indeed , all round it was not of a very high standard . Wootton, a colt , byhis bowling helped materially to win the matchfor Kent by 36 runs . Kent, 121 and 174; total , 295. Surrey , 156 and 103 ; total , 259. Wootton(2ndinnings , Surrey). Overs. Canterbury , August 19 , 20, 1880. Kentwasnot well represented , and Lancashire had an easy victory . Mr. Appleby's bowling proved too much for the Kentish batsmen, and they wereall dismissed for 108.
