The Yorkshiremen , as in the previous season , proved themselves unequal to the task of playing the slow bowling of Mr. A. G. Steel , and indeed their show in this match was a sorry one. Lockwood(28) was the only batsman to offer any lengthened resistance to the Lancashire bowling on the first day, and at the end of an innings the home eleven were 101 to the good, Messrs . D. Q. (52 ) and A.G. Steel (36 ) alone scoring nine more runs than the opposite eleven . It seemed hardly probable that Yorkshire would a second time be dismissed for less than three figures , but Pinder's 19 (not out) proved to be the highest con- tribution , and Lancashire won easily by an innings and 32 runs . Sheffield , August 11, 12, 13, 1879 . Mr. A. G. Steel was this time not present to do the Yorkshire batsmen any mischief , and Lancashire was neither well represented nor in luck. Yorkshire , on the other hand, cameout in its true colours , and as eight of the eleven got double figures against the bowling of William McIntyre , Barlow, Watson , Nash, and Crossland , it will be gathered that their batting was of a high class through- out , Bates leading the way with a score of 118 , got without the shadow of a chance . The Lancashire batting was singularly uneven , as in the first innings the last six wickets only added one run, and in the second the same six were all dismissed in half an hour. Mr. Hornby, in the second innings of the Lancastrians , scored 55 out of 72 while he was in, but otherwise the play was singularly tame for a usually good batting side . Yorkshire won by an innings and 80 runs . Yorkshire , 353. Lancashire , 87 and 186 ; total , 273. Ulyett (1st innings , Lancashire ) Overs Maidens R u n s Wicket. 2 5 . 2 1 4 3 2 7 Allb o w l e d. (4) Lancashirev. Nottinghamshire. Manchester , August 14, 15, 16, 1879 . Daft was away from the side of Notts , but otherwise both shires mustered in full strength , and the result proved them to be very equally matched . Mr. A. G. Steel's bowling was less successful than usual , and most of the Nottingham cracks got into respectable figures , Scotton , the left -hander , being well to the front with two good scores of 51 and 45. Mr. Hornby was as usual busy with 45 out of 61 for the first wicket of Lancashire ; and at the end of an inn- ings Notts were 22 runs to the bad. Although the weather was fine , three full days saw the game far from its close , and at the finish Notts were 152 runs on with two wickets still to fall , a draw that could not be strictly described as uneven . Lancashire , 184. Notts , 162 and 174 (eight wickets ) ; total , 336.s G
