James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880
8 0 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. knownto its great rival . Five victories out of ten engagements with only one reverse represent avery successful summary ; and with plenty of bowling , strong batting , and fine , at times brilliant , all -round fielding , and perhaps now the best professional wicket -keeping in England , Lancashire is fully entitled to hold its head up with the best. During the season the Committee intro- duced three new, and all useful , players in Crossland , Nash, and Briggs , and in the last -named, whois quite ayoungster , they have beyond doubt a very promis- ing bat. Mr. A. G. Steel did not play often during the year, and this makes the successes of the eleven the more praiseworthy . R e s u l t so fM a t c h e s . The first county match of the season , and played in weather premonitory of what cricketers had to undergo throughout the year . Ahigh wind , drizzling rain, andwickets at times anything but easy, these were the accompaniments of the opening contest , as of most of its successors during 1879. Daft (41 ) and Oscroft (49) began auspiciously enough for Notts with 83 runs for the first wicket ; and for Lancashire , who were by no means well represented , Briggs , quite a youngster , showed very good cricket for 36-a promising débût for a Colt against such bowling as that of Notts . Atthe end of an innings Lanca- shire were 62 runs to the bad, but there was no chance of the completion of the game, and when Notts had made 159 for six wickets in their second venture , the match was drawn. Notts , 187 and 159 (six wickets ) ; total 346. Lanca- shire , 125. M o n e y(Notts) O v e r s 4 4 3 M a i d e n s -27 R u n s W i c k e t s 138
