James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880
7 8 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. (7) K e n tv. S u s s e x. Town Malling , July 31 , August 1, 1879 . Occasional showers , bad light , and a high wind were the characteristics of at least the opening day of this match , and throughout , indeed , there was little in the cricket to excite the few spectators present . Eight of the Kentish eleven got double figures in their first attempt , headed by the Hon. Ivo Bligh with 43, and the result was a creditable total of 209. HenryPhillips (58 and 34) was the chief scorer for Sussex , and Charlwood , during the season a mere shadow of his former self , for once showed up well , getting 31 and 14. Kent seemed to have an easy task in going in with 85 runs to win, but Messrs. Pedley (his first appearance ) and Smith disposed of them all for 73 , and Sussex gained its one victory of the year by 11 runs . Sussex , 146 and 147 ; total , 293 . Kent, 209 and 73 ; total , 282. M a i d e n s R u n s W i c k e t s 6 3 6 7 Kentput a very poor eleven into the field , with Lord Harris , Messrs . F. Penn, A. Penn, and R. S. Jones , who had just previously performed wonders at Canterbury , all absent . Surrey had the best of a splendid wicket , and were in all the opening day, the tail making within 7 runs of the first five wickets . Blamires and Southerton found little difficulty in disposing of the Kentish eleven in their first innings for 89 , and though Mr. Mackinnon, whoplayed an exceedingly fine innings of 66, and Hon. Ivo Bligh (34) in the second made a good stand in the second attempt , the last seven wickets only added 52 runs , and ultimately Surrey won by an innings and 1 run . Surrey , 281. Kent, 89 and 191; total , 280. (9) K e n tv. Lancashire. Canterbury , August 21 , 22 , 23 , 1879 . Less than an hour's play on the first day, and none at all on the third , left no possible chance of a decision of the return match between these counties . Mr.Hornbyand Barlow began well enough for Lancashire with 72 runs for the first wicket, but the last nine menonly managed to double the score , thanks to the deadliness of George Hearne's aim. Mr. Absolomgave the Lancastrians a taste of his peculiar style of hitting , but he only had a chance of scoring 44 not out towards the Kentish total of 59 for one wicket , when rain caused a complete suspension of operations . Kent, 59 (one wicket ). Lancashire , 144 . G. Hearne(Kent) O v e r s M a i d e n s R u n s W i c k e t s 5 3 8 57-3 2 6 (10) K e n tv. Nottinghamshire. Nottingham , August 25, 26, 1879 . Kent, with the exception of Lord Harris and Mr. A. Penn, hadits strength , butthe absence of the latter weakened its already far from formidable bowling , and the result was another innings defeat . Scotton (77 ), Oscroft (56), and Barnes (54) contributed chiefly to the Nottinghamshire total of 253 ; and the two players , while in together , did some big hitting , scoring exactly 100 runs in an hour. But for Messrs . F. Penn (2 and 51) and Foord -Kelcey (42 and 5), Kent
