W i c k e t s 7 The last county match of the season , and , like most of its predecessors in 1879 , ruined by the weather . Play was impossible on the first day owing to heavy rain , and on the second an early start was not practicable . The ground , too , was in just the right state for bowling , and Mr. W. G. Grace especially had a busy time of it , as will be seen below. Messrs . Readand Townsend each made 48 for Surrey and Gloucestershire respectively , and in Surrey's second venture Mr. J. Shuter put a little life into the game by vigorous hitting , scoring 44 out of 79 including two sixes ; at the end of an innings Surrey was one run to the good , and ultimately the match was drawn , time not allowing Gloucester shire to go in again .
