Thefirst match of the Cheltenham week originated in 1878 by Mr. James Lillywhite , and carried out under his management . Incessant rain during the Sundaycaused the ground to be very slow at the outset , and the weather inter- fered more or less with the game till the last , preventing the delivery of a ball on the second day. Yorkshire made a very bad start with five of their best wickets down for 40, and it was only the timely stand of Emmett (44) and Hall (25) that enabled the eleven to reach the moderate total of 135. At the end of the first day four Gloucestershire wickets were down for 57 runs , but on the third morning neither the bowlers nor the fieldsmen could get a foothold , and the Gloucestershire batsmen had things much their ownway; Mr. Moberlycontributing 61, Mr. G. F. Grace and Midwinter each 50. The match was drawn. Gloucestershire , 269. Yorkshire , 139 and 63 (one wicket ) ; total, 202. (7) Gloucestershire v. Nottinghamshire. Cheltenham , August 21 , 22, 23, 1879. Adisastrous match for Gloucestershire , inasmuch as it produced the first defeat the eleven have ever experienced at home at the hands of a county . The wicket was anything but easy after the copious rains of the early part of the week , and scoring was exceedingly difficult . Selby , who carried out his bat for 29, was the only batsman able to get double figures in the first attempt of Nottinghamshire , and at the end of an innings Gloucestershire had an advantage of 58. Alfred Shaw did an extraordinary bowling performance in the second innings of Gloucestershire , delivering his last 16 overs for 13 runs and five wickets . With one batsman gone (Scotton ), the chances of Nottinghamshire making the 178 runs they needed to win on a far from favourable wicket seemed very doubtful . Good bowling and smart fielding did all that could be done, but, thanks to the splendid play of Shrewsbury (87) and Barnes (53), who raised the score from 2 to 146 , Nottinghamshire won a very deserving victory bysix wickets , securing honours that have never before fallen to a county eleven . Nottinghamshire , 65 and 178 (four wickets ) ; total , 243. Gloucester- shire , 123 and 119. Total 242. Shaw(2nd innings , Gloucestershire ) . . . . . . . Overs Maidens 1 8 9 (8) Gloucestershire v. Lancashire. Clifton , August 25, 26, 27, 1879 . R u n s 1 4 W i c k e t s 5 This match was for Midwinter's benefit , but unfortunately the rain did not allow any play on either the second or third day, and hence there was no chance either of profit for the one professional of any note in Gloucestershire ,
