The summary of 1879 would show Gloucestershire to be, on paper ,muchbe- low the standard of former years . Only one match was actually won out of ten engagements , and though six were drawn , some , no doubt , in their favour , three were lost . Mr. W. G. Grace was in as good form as ever , both with bat and ball , but generally the eleven did not exhibit the dash that used to characterise their play , and the fielding , once their strong point , was at times very loose . Only one new player came to the front during the season , and some of the old ones did not show anything like their pristine vigour , so that altogether there was little reason for describing 1879 as a year of promise for Gloucestershire , which, by the way, had to mourn its maiden defeat at home by a county since the institution of the club .
