James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880
T H E COUNTIES IN 18790 6 9 it was anybody's game. Anexceedingly plucky score of 68 by Foster gave Derby- shire a fair start , their total of 129 being of some value under the conditions of ground . The state of the wicket may be gathered from the fact that the Yorkshiremenwere in twenty minutes at the end of the first afternoon without a run, and on the second day it was even worse . Hill and Peate dismissed by Derbyshire eleven in their second attempt for 45 ; but, despite a praiseworthy innings by Mr. H. Wood, Mycroft, and Hay, the former of w h o mcontributed very considerably to the success of his side , proved altogether too muchfor the Yorkshiremen at the close , and Derbyshire gained a most creditable victory , its first of the season , by 27 runs. Derbyshire , 129 and 45; total , 174. York- shire , 80 and 67 ; total , 147 . Hill (Yorkshire ) Mycroft (Derbyshire ). The return match somewhat unexpectedly corroborated instead of reversing the result of its predecessor , and the victory of Derbyshire was this time much more decisive . The heavy rain on the second afternoon caused the Derbyshire eleven , with a majority of 65 on the first innings , to have the game pretty well in their hands , and the Yorkshiremen only made a poor show at the close . Seven out of the Derbyshire team got into double figures , but Ulyett (22) and Pinder (31) contributed 59 to Yorkshire's first score of 81 ; and in the second innings Pinder was again the highest scorer with 16. William Mycroft's bowling again ruined the chances of Yorkshire . Derbyshire wonby an innings and 2 runs . Derbyshire , 146. Yorkshire , 81 and 63 ; total , 144 . Mycroft (Derbyshire ). Derbyshire only showed a very slight improvement on the batting form shownat Nottingham, and the result was almost as disastrous . Onboth sides the scoring was small , as Shrewsbury's 27 for Notts was the highest score of the match ; and three innings altogether only produced 205 runs . Notts won by an innings and 15 runs . Notts , 110. Derbyshire , 59 and 36 ; total , 95. Morley's bowling was again extraordinary . Morley (Notts ) .
