James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880
6 8 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. (1) Derbyshire v. Lancashire. Manchester , June 5, 6, 1879 . Abowler's match throughout , despite that the wicket , at least at the outset , was in good condition . Rigley's sixteen was the highest score in the first . innings of Derbyshire , and the thirty -one of Platts the only double figure in the second . Chiefly through the effective bowling of Hayand Platts , the Lancashire eleven were all dismissed for 81 (Mr. Rowley 25 not out ) but the home team had always a little in hand , and they finally wonby six wickets . Barlow's slow left -hand round arm bowling for Lancashire was the feature of the match. Lancashire , 81 and 42 ; (four wickets ), total , 123 , Derbyshire , 64 and 57 ; total , 121. Neither side played its full strength , and the match was almost a parallel of its predecessor . The Derbyshire totals were very equal , though the in- dividual contributions were uneven, Foster making 42 out of the first score of 102, Platts 48 out of the second of 101. Thanks chiefly to the excellent defence of Barlow (50) and a really well -played 44 by Watson, Lancashire were able to claim a majority of 52 runs on the first innings , but they had rather a narrow squeak at the finish , and the 50 runs they wanted to win cost them as manyas 6 good wickets . Lancashire wonby four wickets . Lancashire , 154and 50 (six wickets ) ; total , 204. Derbyshire , 102 and 101 ; total 203. Overs Maidens R u n s Wickets 6 W m. Nottingham , July 10, 11 , 1879 . 3 6 The weakness of the Derbyshire batting was shownunmistakably in this match , and the game was robbed of all its interest long before the close of the first day. The Nottingham eleven were well got rid of for 159 , but this number was far beyond the reach of their opponents , as events proved , and the match was rotable for the smallest total made in a good match during 1879 . The first innings of Derbyshire was a curiosity ; 1 and 2 for 0, 3 for 3, 4 for 4, 5 for 11 ; 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 for 16 ; duration 50 minutes . In their second attempt the first two batsmenfell without a run, so that in all on the first day twelve Derbyshire wickets realised 16, the last seven having failed to score . A well- hit nineteen by Foster was indeed the only double figure on the Derbyshire side , and Notts wonby an innings and 99 runs . Notts, 159. Derbyshire , 16 and 44; total , 60. The bowling of Shawand Morley deserves perpetual record . S h a w Morley O v e r s 3 4 33.2 M a i d e n sR u n sW i c k e t s 2 1 1 7 (4) Derbyshirev. Yorkshire.
