Both sides were strongly represented , but again the state of the ground ruined the chance of any good cricket . A peculiar contrast presented itself on aninspection of the two elevens , Middlesex having only one professional in its ranks , Nottinghamshire but one amateur . There was no play on the first day, none till late on the second , and in consequence the match was left drawn in a very interesting condition . In three innings Mr. I. D. Walker's second score of 32 was the highest contribution , and the average then had been just 9 runs for each batsman. Nottinghamshire went in with 157 runs to win in less than two hours , and whenthe gamewas finished had made 74 for two wickets , so that things looked a little in their favour . The match was drawn. Middlesex , 82 and 141 ; total , 223. Nottinghamshire , 66 and 74 (for two wickets , total ) ; 137 . Over Thirty. Lord's , July 21 , 22 , 23 . N odoubt a considerable injury was done to this match by the reticence of the authorities at Lord's in refusing to deny the statements made publicly , that the proceeds were to be given to Mr. Grace, and that the contest was only arranged to give opportunity for presentation of the testimonial which had been some time in collection for England's greatest cricketer . On the failure of Alfred Shaw's benefit match , a kindly suggestion by Mr. Grace prompted the Committee of the Marylebone Club to promise the celebrated Nottingham bowler the profits of the fixture now under notice , with unfortunately the same result . Even late on the second morning it was doubtful whether the game would be commenced , and but for the testimonial in all probability a start never would have been made. Dr. E. M. Grace, whomade40, and 33 not out,
