Lord's , July 7, 8, 9, 1879 . Thebest match of the year , unfortunate like almost every one of its prede- cessors . With Mr. G. F. Grace debarred from playing by the recent enactment of the Marylebone Club anent amateurs , the Gentlemen could hardly have been strengthened except by the introduction of Mr. I. D. Walker. On the side of the Players , Bates might certainly have been substituted for Daft or Lockwood with advantage on their form of 1879 , but otherwise the elevens were both very strong . On a good wicket some heavy scoring wouldhave been the result , but the turf at Lord's unfortunately never recovered from the effects of the copious rainfall till the season was practically over , and the match in question suffered the same as most of its less important companions . Rain prevented a com- mencement on the first day until 2.15 P.M. , and a storm , which stopped the game on the second afternoon , caused the ground to be so utterly unfit for play that cricketers were deprived of the opportunity of witnessing what seemed likely to be an exciting finish on the third day. Avery finely played score of 61 by Ulyett an innings truly masterly on a very difficult wicket --enabled the Players to reach a very fair total of 121 ; and, strangely enough , on the other side the highest scorer was the last and certainly least likely batsman , Mr. A. H. Evans , whose well -hit 26 not out was really a pleasant relief to a very dull innings . Had the weather permitted any play on the third day , the Gentlemen would have had to go in with 116 runs to win, and as this number would have taken some getting against Shaw, Morley , Barnes , Barlow and Emmett, on a ground altogether against scoring , the gamewas left in as interesting condition as it well could have been .
