Heavy rain on the night preceding the match , following an almost con- tinuous rain during the two first days of the week, had reduced Lord's to a swamp, and a commencement might well have been deferred until the second morning . Instead , when play did begin , at three P.M. on the first day, neither bowlers , batsmen , nor those in the field could gain a secure foothold , and the sight of fieldsmen unable to turn to get after a ball reduced the cricket to little short of a mockery. Messrs . Lucas (22 and 25) and Lindsay (45 and 3) played well, but the best cricket on the Surrey side was that of Boardman, a colt , who got 30 and 22 in very promising style .
