James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880
5 4 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS ANNUAL. Vernon , Pearson , and Ridley , Hon. E. Lyttelton , Shaw, Morley , Barnes , and Wild. The Cambridge twelve altogether failed to come up to their reputation with the bat, as Mr. D. Q. Steel's fifteen was the highest score , and Morley took six of their wickets at a cost of only 28 runs . The feature of the game was a splendid innings for the M.C.C. by Mr. Frank Penn, who contributed 134 out of 190 while he was in, by some of the finest cricket seen during the year , and without anything like a chance . At the end of the first day Cam- bridge had got 11 of their minority of 169 on the first innings , but rain did not permit them to add more than 36 runs for the loss of a wicket , and the match was consequently drawn . The trial twelve in this match was not such a formidable one as had opposed the Cantabs earlier in the week, but as there was little chance of any reliable form in the state of the ground, muchof the interest that would have attached to the gamewas lost . The impression derived from the batting of the Oxon- ians was not favourable to them, and as there were only two at all dangerous batsmen on the side of M.C.C. there was nothing to try their bowling . The weather allowed little more than one half the period of a full match, and the gamehad to be given up with only twenty-two wickets down. The match was drawn . M.C.C. and Ground , 118. Tunbridge Wells , July 17 and 18, 1879. To a far from strong eleven of Marylebone the county opposed almost , if not quite its full strength . Still Kent had if anything the worst of the luck . and the result was an easy win for M.C.C. Lord Harris and Mr. Absolom were the only batsmen at all successful in either venture of Kent, and in the second innings nine of the team together only secured 29 runs . Flowers , whowas badly missed when he had reached 44, was the chief scorer for Mary- lebone with 81 ; and as Barnes (53) and he jointly subscribed 134 to a total of 194, it maybe inferred that the batting otherwise was weak. M.C.C. won by an innings and 6 runs . W m. Mycroft(M.C.C.) М.С.С. , 194. Kent, 103 and 85 ; total , 188. Jasnotgrila ! Overs Maidens Runs Wickets 6 9 . 1 4 0 (11 ) M.C.C.andG r o u n dv. Lancashire. Lord's , July 28, 29, 1879 . 6 6 1 1 Amatch played under circumstances rarely experienced during the season of 1879--fine weather and a good wicket . Both sides were strong in bowling, proportionably weak in batting , and the absence of Mr. Hornby especially interfered greatly with the chance of the county . Despite the good cricket of Mr. E. F. S. Tylecote (29), and Flowers (32, not out), M.C.C. began with a poor score of 103 , and at the end of an innings Lancashire were 65 to the
