The bowling of M.C.C. in this match was confined to Steele , Clayton , and Rylott not by any means an array equal to that in the previous match at Cambridge-and the result was different , the victory of Oxford , heightened by the fact of A. H. Evans's absence , impressing their partisans considerably . William Hearn of Herts performed the unusual feat of going in first for M.C.C. and carrying out his bat for 58, and in the second innings Mr. H. Ross scored 71 out of a total of 130 from the bat, but otherwise the batting was only tame. A Freshman W. A. Thornton , an old Wykehamist , made a name with a very plucky score of seventy , at a critical stage of the game, and it was to him that the defeat of the club was in a great measure due. Oxford wonby 6 wickets . M.C.C. and Ground, 126 and 136 ; total , 262. Oxford University , 166 and 98 (4 wickets ) ; total , 264. Anything like run-getting was altogether impossible , in the condition of the ground, which was thoroughly saturated with copious rains . The Premier Club had again to intrust its reputation to a far from formidable eleven , yet the result was in their favour , with no small majority in hand. Mr. Ross (13 and 10) was the highest scorer for the club , and the county madeeven a still more pitiable show, Hon. Ivo Bligh's dozen representing just one half of the runs madefrom the bat in the second innings . M.C.C. wonby 50 runs . M.C.C. and Ground, 64 and 66; total , 130. Kent, 55 and 25; total , 80. Continuous rain prevented any play at all on the first day, and under the circumstances iong scores were out of the question . Some good hitting by Mr. Hornby to the tune of 40, and Mr. Vernon 25, enabled Marylebone to reach a fairly respectable score of 94, and to head the county by 24 on first innings . In the second , Hon. E. Lyttelton (31 ), Messrs . Vernon (26), and Hornby con- tributed 68 out of 77 from bat , the last five wickets only adding 16 runs . Notts had 103 runs to get , but William Mycroft had a wicket that just suited him, and it was solely his effective bowling towards the close that gave the club a well -earned victory by 16 runs . Lord's , June 23 , 24, 25, 1879. Marylebone sent into the field a far stronger team than any that had repre- sented it previously during the season , including Messrs . I. D. Walker , F. Penn,
