James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880

5 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAL. opposition as Yorkshire . In bowling , on the other hand, the Premier Club had no lack of change with Shaw, Morley , Barnes , and Mr. Stratford , and as the ground was very slow from the heavy rains , and all against the batsmen , the advan- tage on the side of M.C.C. in the bowling department turned the scale . With the exception of Lockwood , who made 31 , not out , and 26, none of the Yorkshire- menshowed anyskill with the bat , and the really best score of the match was Mr. Pearson's 52 for M.C.C. In first innings of Marylebone , the last five wickets only added 10 runs . M.C.C. won by nine wickets . M.C.C. and Ground , 130 and 24 (one wicket ) ; total , 154. Cambridge, M a y22, 23, 1879. Seven ground men and four amateurs , to wit Messrs . C. Booth , J. E. Studd, G. B. Studd, and A. S. Barnes, this was the Marylebone team, to do honour to Cambridge. Shaw, Mycroft , Barnes , Flowers , and G. Hearne were there to bowl, it is true , but Barnes andFlowers were really the only batsmen usually to be counted upon for runs , and in this case neither came off to any tune . It was in reality any odds on the University , and public form was justified by their easy victory with aninnings and 78 runs to spare . Play was impossible on the second day owing to rain, but in spite of a slow ground , the Çantabs, notably A. G. Steel (52), and R. S. Jones (41), showed good cricket , and their total of 231 was a very creditable one. The batting of M.C.C. was as weak as it appeared on paper , and Barnes , with 21 not out , and 8, was highest contributor . Cambridge wonby aninnings and 78 runs . Cam- bridge Univ. , 231. Marylebone was not particularly well represented in any department , but the batting of the county was not strong enough to inflict muchdamage on the bowling of Rylott , George Hearne , and Mr. Stratford , and on both sides the scoring was low, a result in some measure attributable , it must be admitted to the heavy state of the ground . Marylebone went in first , but no stand was madeagainst the attack of Flint , a slow round-arm bowler , for some years absent from Derbyshire cricket , and W. Mycroft , and the innings only lasted an hour and forty minutes , containing one double figure , 13 , by Mr. E. J. Stadd . Somebrilliant hitting by Foster, who scored 50 out of 73 runs while he was in, relieved the first day's play , but excepting a well -played 38 by Mr. A. S. Duncan, in second innings of M.C.C. , there was nothing else to record , but the closeness of the finish . M.C.C. won by 15 runs . M.C.C. and Ground 60 and 108 ; total , 168.
