James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880
T H EF I F T HE N G L I S HT E A MI N A U S T R A L I A . 2 1 twice a week, and on the other four afternoons are continually practising bowl- ing, and the advantages they have over us in weather and seasons will tell to such an extent that , in the course of a few years , I believe , as good a team will be turned out of the colonies combined, as can be out of the old country . Andlastly , I would say, in all good feeling , let the game be played in no cavilling mood, but with a steady determination to abide by the rules of the game in a conciliatory spirit , and, if it exists , let the professional betting ele- m e n tbe eradicated fromthe cricket field . The honest excitement of a match wantsno such mercenary aid. I hope that m yfriends in Australia will feel that these remarks are offered in no spirit of captious criticism , but from a de- voted admiration for the noblest and manliest of games, and from an earnest desire for its improvement as well abroad as at home. Themanykindnesses we received during our tour through the colonies , time cannot obliterate from our memories. If our thanks were not adequately ex- pressed at the time, it was not because we lacked the power of appreciation ; it wouldhave been utterly impossible for m e, in this short account of our doings , to mention by name one half of those , whomwe have to thank for making our visit such a pleasant one-but I can honestly say, that whenever we think of our cricket tour to Australia , which cannot be seldom , their names will in our minds be inseparably , and most gratefully , connected with it .
