IT would have been strange , considering the state of the grounds during 1879 , had not some at least of the principal bowlers shown extraordinary figures , Amongthe professionals Alfred Shaw, Hill , W. Mycroft , Rylott , Barlow , Bates , Emmett, Flowers , Hay, Lillywhite , and Morley were most successful of the older hands , and four promising aspirants appeared in the persons of Bray and O'Shaughnessy (Kent), Blamires (Surrey ), and Peate (Yorkshire ). Among the amateurs Messrs . W. G. Grace, Evans, A. F. Ford, Lucas, A. G. Steel , Sharp , and Woodall upheld their reputations , but generally the bowling was not up to the highest standard .
