A MORE unpropitious season for batsmen it would be impossible to conceive , and hence in many cases the figures bear an unfavourable contrast with those of previous years . Mr. W. G. Grace , though he did not play quite so much as heretofore , has the best average ; and the other amateurs , Messrs . Hornby, Lucas, F. Penn, A. G. Steel , I. D. Walker, the brothers Shuter, and Hon. A. Lyttelton , were the most successful . Oscroft can claim the best average among the professionals , and Ulyett , Foster , Scotton , Barnes , Flowers , Barlow , Shrewsbury, Lockwood, and Midwinter all came out well .
