A CRICKET TRIP across the seas for pleasure only is something of a novelty in these practical days , and the recent tour of the Irish Amateurs through the United States and America on that account alone deserves exceptional pro- minence . W eregret that the difficulties of procuring official information have compelled us to rely chiefly on the reports that have appeared in the various Transatlantic newspapers for our record of the doings of the Irish gentlemen , but we have every reason to believe that the scores which follow represent a correct summary of the tour . The trip itself lasted about two months , and though there were a few small disagreeables , notably in the necessary abandon- ment of the Young America match at Philadelphia , in consequence of Newhall's objection to Rylott's umpiring , generally the excursion was a most enjoyable one, and maypossibly be repeated . With the exception of the one innings defeat at Philadelphia the cricket shown Ly the visitors was quite up to the N 2
