James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880

1 5 0 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUALLYU INT where , and safe catch . C. J. M. Godfrey (Captain for 1880 ): a good fast bowler , more than once has saved a match by getting wickets at a critical moment; should study pitch more ; much improved in batting ; a fine field ; winner of the average ball . E. I. Green : an excellent field anywhere , but a splendid point ; bats in neat style , but has been unlucky this season ; should run with better judgment . W. G. Woolsey : a steady bat, drives well to the off, a good and active field , and sometimes a useful change bowler . A. Waldron : bats in good form , but has not enough patience ; an effective slow bowler, and capital field . C. G. L. Page : a magnificent cover -point , with quick return ; a brilliant catch ; has come out as a bat towards the end of the season . *S. C. Field : a careful bat , but not as successful as was expected ; never idle in the field . H. M. Wells : promises well both as a bat and bowler ; bowls with a nice easy action ; in batting , cuts well . A. G. Robins : a change bowler ; unsuccessful as a bat ; rather slow in the field . H. Woolsey : pro- mising bat ; quick in the field . M E R C H A N T T Y L O R S ' S C H O O L . Matches won, 6 : Comet C.C. (Putney ) twice ; Elstree School , Godolphin School , Una C.C. , and H. W. Dennis (who has now left for St. John's College , Oxford ) : has proved himself well -fitted for his post ; his steady batting , successful bowling , and, at times , brilliant fielding , were the mainstay of the eleven ; he was ably seconded by A. V. Despard , who batted in very good form throughout the season . Good anywhere in the field , especially as half back-stop . R. K. Ellis : batted freely and occasionally well , especially in the M.C.C. match , when he made a useful 26 ; not quite brisk enough in the field . F. Knox : is a hard -hitter , but has not come off ; very quick in the field . F. G. Bampfylde: was very successful with the ball , and batted very steadily . R. F. Hosken : was not successful with the bat ; a capital field . H. G. Ratcliffe : bids fair to become an excellent bat , though he did not play very often ; in the long field he did very creditably . P. H. Hammersley : bowled very well at times , but not always with the same success ; hehas much improved in his batting . M. J. Simmonds : made agood many runs , and was most useful as a long -stop . A. C. Curtis : batted steadily , though unsuccessfully , and has greatly improved in his fielding . Sapsworth : did not do so well as we expected ; rather lazy in the field .
