Kempthorne (Capt .) : the best bat in the eleven , is still weak on his leg stump, and sometimes over -anxious to hit ; good short -slip . J. E. Williams : a most uncertain bat , far too fond of gallery- hitting ; good field , and fair change bowler . H. E. Lewis : the best bowler in the eleven , has a fair break-back; ought to makea good bat. J. O. Evans : a fair bat, but not improved much, still pulls from his leg ; excellent field . D. S. Jones : as a bat , is too fond of playing back ; promises well for next year ; very good at cover -point . A. L. Rowland: a left -handed bat ; lacks patience ; good field , and safe catch . F. C. Cornish : disappointing bat , excellent long- stop . W. J. Rowland : bowls slow-round, proved very destructive on one or two occasions ; did not come off in batting . E. H. Bayley did not improve in batting or bowling as one might expect ; good field and catch . G. T. Evans : bowls slow ; is very straight , but not muchwork on yet to be effective ; as a bat, too fond of hitting . E. P. Wells : amost energetic and painstaking captain ; set his team an example of steady defensive batting ; owing to an accident unable to bowl. *A. E. David : a brilliant and thoroughly sound bat ; plays with great confidence , and generally gets runs ; a fine leg- hitter ; has done good service as a wicket -keeper throughout the season , and occasionally bowled ; winner of the average bat . A. H. Coombes : has rather weak defence , but when once set makes runs very fast ; a most useful and effective medium-pace bowler , being always on the spot ; a first -rate field any
