James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880
THE UNIVERSITIES AND PUBLIC SCHOOLSIN 1879. 1 4 7 greatly ; an effective hitter , and usually gets runs , having come out more towards the end of the season ; a fine field , and good catch ; bowls sometimes . R. M. Kirwan : greatly improved since last year , and has played some good innings , notably against Finchley ; though his style is not very free , he is very steady , and cuts well ; fair change bowler , but very slow in the field . S. Gilbey : a very steady , though not a run-getting bat, but has a good style : very promising as a slow-bowler , and excellent field . A. Wilkes : bats in good form , and plays forward well , but does not come off on a slow ground ; often fields well , but is rather uncertain . J. Y. Woolcombe : bats in as good form as anyone in the eleven , but is not strong enough to get manyruns , though ho usually stays at the wickets some time ; has improved in fielding , but still requires practice . F. W. Sewell : showed great promise at the beginning of the season , and bats well on a dry wicket ; has a good off -drive , but is stiff in the arms and shoulders ; good long-stop . R. W. Burrows : a good and free hitter , but lacking defence , and apt to play with a cross stroke ; should practise wicket -keeping more. J. H. Mathews : has greatly fallen off ; showed some promise of bowling at the beginning of the season , but has since fallen off ; fair field . E. Pullinger : is in the eleven chiefly for his fielding , which is good in the deep field ; is a sure catch , and can also long -stop ; as a bat , is sometimes useful , but does not take enough interest in the game to improve rapidly . G. R. Newbery : has not by any means come up to expectations ; has a bad habit of playing with a cross bat , and therefore seldom stays long at the wickets ; sometimes fields well . F E L S T E D S C H O O L . FELSTED ELEVEN IN 1879.-C. Mitchell (Captain ) : a good left -hand bat with a free action and strong defence ; a first -rate field , and deserving of every praise as captain . E. Copland : batted well and in good style throughout the season ; a steady and useful bowler . R. Stuart King : a fair bat , with careful practice would be good ; a good field , and useful as a bowler ; (Captain for next year). H. E. H. Gillett : a rather uncertain bat, but with good hitting powers . J. S. Cluster : a fair but timid slow bowler ; played one or two pro- mising innings . H. Thursby : A very promising bat, with good style , would dobetter if less nervous ; rather slow in the field . C. D. J. Carmichael : im- proved wonderfully in batting ; a safe long -stop . R. W. Crawshay : plays in good style , but wants confidence ; would have bowled better if he had adopted one action . T. M. Nelson : a plucky and determined hitter , promising well. C. T. Salisbury : a fair and improving wicket -keep . I. E. S. Moore : bats in a style of his own, but sometimes got runs ; may become a useful bowler . С. А. Copland : improved very much in batting during the season , but still rather stiff ; a painstaking cricketer . K I N GW I L L I A M ' SC O L L E G E (Isle of M a n). B A T T I N GA V E R A G E S .
