Professional , A. Ruston (Middlesex ). Number of members , 140. Matches , 9 : won, 6; lost , 2; drawn, 1 . E. R. Wethey (28) : a most energetic and popular captain ; excellent bat, with strong defence and hitting powers : average speaks for him ; bowls well at times ; splendid field at point . W. M. Wadsworth (83) : a good, but un- lucky bat ; wants practice ; sure judge of a long catch . A. M. Hutchinson (21.6 ) : a free , hard -hitting bat ; seldom failed to score ; could always be relied on as a bowler ; medium pace , with good pitch . J. V. Whiteside (12-2 ) : has improved immensely in batting , both as regards form and effect , since last year ; sharp field at cover -point ; fair change bowler ; succeeds to the captaincy . E. B. Bratton (21-7 ) : batted admirably early in the season , but afterwards was rather disappointing ; a ng dangerous but uncertain bowler ; safe field . A. E. Medforth (10.6 ) : excellent long -stop ; a useful left -handed bat ; played exceedingly well on several occasions . W. H. Scott (8.5 ) : very pretty bat, with good defence ; the essence of laziness in the field ; fair slow bowler , promises well for next year. R. W. Hogg (8) : always batted neatly to the professional , but, perhaps through nervousness , was rather unlucky in matches ; fair field at long -leg . R. A. Waters (8.2 ): did not quite come up to expecta- tions formed of him; bats steadily in his own peculiar style ; only moderate field . E. S. Shortt (8.5 ) : plays very straight , and will make a good bat in time . R. W. Armstrong (8): a promising slow bowler ; has a very respectable idea of batting . J. F. MacCartie (12 ) : his high average is no index to his scoring propensities , but is to be accounted for by his general luck in being not out ; very useful as a long -field . F O R E S TS C H O O L .
