Hornsby : made a most energetic and painstaking captain , and greatly conduced to the success of the eleven ; his bowling was invaluable all through the season ; in batting , was not quite so successful as last year; a good field and safe catch . J. Steel : the most artistic , andone of the most useful bats in the eleven ; towards the latter part of the season improved muchin his hitting powers ; we expect to see him an excер- tionally good bat next season ; very useful in the field at point . A. R. Don- Wauchope :pe has improved immensely in his batting , though stil a litle weak indefence ; hits hard and clean especially to leg , and when set scores quickly off any bowling ; would play yet better if he got rid of the habit of stooping over the ball ; a splendid field at cover -point , and can bowl when wanted . R. A. Carruthers : at the beginning of the season scored always , but fell off somewhattowards the end ; a good bowler and very useful as a change ; an excellent catch and good field , though sometimes might be more on the alert . W. M. Duncan : a very fast bowler , straight with break from off, and on his day difficult to score from ; was very muchover-bowled at the end of the season ; a promising bat with good hitting powers ; fair field . * W.E. White : has too stiff and cramped a style of batting , though he generally scores when runs are wanted ; a very good long -stop . G. F. Campbell : a good bat, with apretty cut ; can throw almost anydistance from leg , where he is a mostuseful field . W. M. Macleod : kept wicket during the season , but with indifferent success ; showed considerable batting promise early in the season , but unac- countably fell off ; can field out when required , being good catch . P. A. Η. Gethin : bats in good style , but wants more life , and to get runs should hit more ; a capital field especially at leg . A. C. Kay : should make a good bowler, having a good pitch ; was seldom wanted, however, this season ; some- times batted well , but must keep the balls more along the ground ; his field
