C. Benbow (captain ) : combines safe defence with free and brilliant hitting ; an admirable wicket-keeper ; as a captain maybe congratulated on having successfully performed his duty . *C. V. Wilks : has kept up his reputation as a really fine fast round -arm bowler with spin from off ; bats in style peculiar to himself ; has been known to make runs . W. F. G. Sandwith : good free bat , hitting hard and clean , came off at the end of season ; good field . *R. S. Owen : has been prevented by illness from doing full justice to himself ; good field at long -leg . *G. Dale : the prettiest bat in the eleven , cuts and drives freely , but somewhat lacks defence ; excel- lent cover -point . F. W. Janson : has the making of a good free bat , but is too careless ; magnificent point ; sometimes dangerous as a bowler with low delivery and break. *H. S. Westmorland : good steady bat, and fair slow bowler ; excellent long -stop ; always works hard anywhere . *A. B. P. Boyd": agood straight bat, and had he stayed would have been of the greatest service next year ; reliable cover -point and long -leg . *G. H. W. Recce : stubborn bat; cuts well , useful in the field . *J. H. Titcomb ought to make a good left- handbowler with high delivery ; can bat and field on occasions . F. C. Ryde: a fast improving bat and fair field . W I N C H E S T E R C O L L E G E . Captain for 1879, C. T. Weatherby. R e s u l t so fM a t c h e s . Matches Played , 11 ; Won, 6 ; Drawn , 1 ; Lost 4.
