Rotherham : like last year proved him- self a very good bowler , having great command over the ball , and being able to alter his pitch ,' and ' pace ,' without the knowledge of the batsman ; at times hewas almost unplayable ; as a batsman he was not so successful as last year ; a splendid field , more at home at point than at any other place . J. Lees : good steady bat, with very strong defence , hits well to leg ; a splendid field anywhere , and a good long -stop (captain next season ). *M. Field : a very good hitter , plays with a straight bat , but the ground was too dead for his style of play. C. Martineau : avery promising player , having good style , with a long reach , but rather short of confidence . P. A. Eccles : a very useful player ; as a bat has muchimproved, can hit well all round, and has a good defence ; agood field , and change bowler . *H. Ferns : a very good bowler and with a little
