SHREWSBURYELEVENIN 1879 .-*F. G. A. Phillips : has been an excellent captain , and has worked hard and patiently and played many uphill games with great pluck ; has had the burden of the bowling to bear, and has borne it well, has improved muchsince last season in his commandover the ball and generally ; as a bat has not scored , his bat is not straight , and he is apt to be too late in his stroke . C. R. Chance : a hard hitter , and too often neglects his defence to practise hitting ; an erratic fast bowler, a good field ; captain for 1880. *G. C. Whistler : is an excellent bat with a fine free style , plays straight and hard and with spirit , is apt to be impatient of slow scoring ; a moderate field . *G. R. Champion : a fairly safe bat , rather cramped in style , has an ugly way of grounding his bat in cutting ; a fair field , and moderate bowler . F. L. Sprott : a good bat, plays sound and pretty cricket , will constantly improve as he gets older and stronger ; a fair field at point . L. V. Yonge : a hard and confident hitter , too fond of a pull ; an excellent field though not successful behind the wickets this year ; bowls occasionally ; plays up always . Preston : has a cramped style , but plays good fast bowling well ; generally loses his wicket byhitting ; a fair field , bowls slows which are sometimes use- ful. T. E. Pickering : plays with a straight bat, and can hit to leg and cut ; an uncertain field , needs confidence only to be a good cricketer . *F. Henstock : a fair and improving bat, bowler, and field ; with practice would makea good cricketer . J. W. Nicholas : is likely to makea good bowler, has a free easy action , and improves fast ; hits freely , but does not stand up to bowling . * J. R. McLean : covers his wicket well , and hits freely forward ; has to learn to cut and hit to leg ; a good field . С. Т. k
