Leslie : a free bat, his driving powers being particularly effective , but was hardly able to adapt his play to the slow wickets ; was very effective with the ball at times , and always an energetic captain ; captain for 1880. * F. W. Capron : a good bat, played some excellent innings and could be relied on ; prefers a fast wicket , good field . C. A. S. Leggatt : has always made runs , but his defence is weak against first -class bowling ; an excellent bat against weakbowling ; as a bowler has been emi- nently successful all through the year , and is a good field . C. E. Cobb : weak bat, has not improved as he should have done ; fair wicket-keeper , and would be excellent if he took more pains . F. H. Bowden Smith : liable to makeruns on a fast wicket , but does not play with a straight bat ; would be an excellent point if he were not so slack . H. W. Cave : is a good bat , but stands in a very inelegant position ; hits well , but should improve his defence ; very good field . W. P. Ward : a good , sound , steady bat, and ought to improve ; should learn whento hit ; poor field . E. H. Kempson : a very fine bat with good style ; is sure to makea cricketer ; good field . *F. J. Hirst : a pretty bat whenhe comes off, but is very uncertain , should improve ; excellent field at cover-point . L. Fowler : good change bowler (fast round ), fair bat in his own style . S. H.
