Gurdon (Captain for 1879 ) : has discharged his unusually difficult duties with persevering energy ; a good wicket -keeper , and animproving bat with strong off-play . * C. S. Cox: a slow round -hand bowler with a puzzling break ; not successful as a bat . *J. B. Shackle : a powerful bat with a stiff style ; is wanting in defence ; a good field and sure catch. * G. W . Rawlins: the best bat in the eleven, buttoo fond of forward play ;; a very fine field anywhere . G. Gascoyne : want of practice has prevented his being as good a bat as he promised to be ; a fair medium-paced head bowler . *H. Steward : a fair bat with a good defence , but does not use his strength enough in hitting ; fields well at cover -point . H. C. Formby : has the making of a good bat, combining a fair defence with hitting powers ; a fast high -action bowler . C. D. Bruce : a careful and painstaking bat ; shows signs ofimprovement. H. G. Currie : a thorough cricketer , having a good style of batting , and always playing up' throughout the game. *G.F. Richardson : plays with a straight bat , but at present wants more freedom ; is a good point . * R. Hall ; a fair fast bowler , with a good pitch , wants practice in batting ,
