James Lilllywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1880
1 1 6 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL INC a little cramped in back play ; improved in driving powers ; errs on the side of caution in the beginning of an innings ; good point . W. C. Tonge : showed a lamentable falling off from last year's form during the first half of the season , but improved considerably towards the end ; plays in a style of his own, with a stubborn defence , but seldom making use of a power to hit which he undoubtedly possesses . H. Clowes : the wicket -keeper of the eleven , quick and fairly safe ; a hard hitter and plays in good form; but is too eager to score at the beginning of an innings ; with steadiness and care should makea fine bat . * A. W. Kemble : a very steady patient bat with strong defence ; seldom fails to utilise a leg ball and cuts well ; scored consistently through the season : a safe field and catch . R. A. Glass : fast right-hand bowler, uncertain in pitch , but useful at times ; improved as a bat hitting well to leg, but too fond ofa pull . D. M. Jenkins : very useful medium-pace bowler with high delivery ; straight and good length and lasts well ; weak bat. H. P. Cooke : left -hand bat, hits hard to the off, but plays in a cramped position without a straight bat; weak on the left stump ; good long-stop . C. R. Browne : an excellent field at long-leg and mid-off ; painstaking and improving bat though weak at present ; bowls mediumpace with agood and easy delivery and with occasional success . T. J. Llewellin : bowls left -hand mediumpace, difficult at times , but as a rule not sufficiently accurate in pitch and direction ; indifferent bat . えく C L I F T O N C O L L E G E . Captain for 1879 , G.
