O. Powell (Captain ) : a very fine bat, combining good hitting powers with a splendid defence ; is especially strong on the off-side ; a most brilliant and untiring field and safe catch ; was a very good captain , most painstaking with his team, and always set them a good example . C. W. Wright : a very good and steady bat against fast or mediumbowling , but too fond of hitting at slow ; first -class wicket -keeper , never requiring a long -stop ; and was of the greatest assistance to the eleven in this department . * G. W. Searle : Only played part of the season ; steady , but disappointing bat . * C. Twist : the best all -round man in the eleven ; a very hard-hitting bat , with a good unattractive defence ; good fast bowler on a dryday; first -class field with a perfect return . E. L. Dames: a very steady bat, always going in first ; very good to break the bowling ; poor field . L. M. Richards : a very slow bowler , always on the spot ; fair field , disappointing bat . P. M. Walters : the prettiest bat in the eleven , his forward play being especially good, his great weakness being a short ball on the off -stump ; a very uncertain field , at times brilliant . L. Owen : fair medium bowler , steady bat, but much too stiff at present ; splendid field . H. G. Sapte : a very steady but ugly bat , always good for a few runs ; magnificent field at point . W. Lea : fair bat, and would be goodod if he would always play with a straight bat ; dis- appointing as a bowler ; good field . J. Vintcent : a very straight medium bowler , with a good break from the off ; likely with practice to become first- class ; poor, but very much improved bat ; good field .
